Saharan dust events

Thanks to continuous measurements taken on top of the Jungfraujoch and at the aerological station in Payerne, the presence of Saharan dust in the atmosphere can be recorded.

The optical qualities of aerosols have been measured on a continuous basis since 2001 at the high-Alpine research station on the Jungfraujoch. This makes it possible to detect the presence of mineral dust from the Sahara, which is a major component of atmospheric aerosol. Saharan dust events are also detected with LIDAR instruments, which send laser beams into the atmosphere. These instruments are used at the MeteoSwiss aerological station in Payerne.
