The cameras primarily serve to monitor the weather along the main flight paths. The angle and location of the cameras are set specifically for the purpose of monitoring weather conditions, and provide an insight into the terrain and mountain passes that are key for air traffic. The cameras save a panoramic image every ten minutes. Since 2021, MeteoSwiss has been successively upgrading its camera network with the latest camera technology. These new cameras allow 4K panoramic images to be taken with a resolution of up to 100 megapixels, and produce outstanding night-mode images. This makes it easier for meteorologists to monitor aviation weather on a continuous basis and provide precise forecasts.

In addition to monitoring the weather, the MeteoSwiss cameras also provide impressive images of weather phenomena.
