The following is a selection ofinternational cooperative projects in which MeteoSwiss has worked closely with national and international partners:
SOFF is an innovative financing facility that aims to sustainably expand the global meteorological observation infrastructure in developing countries and promote international data exchange by providing long-term financial support to beneficiary countries towards operational costs. Since 2023, MeteoSwiss has assumed the role of SOFF “peer advisor” for the so-called readiness phase in Ecuador, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Haiti. The necessary SOFF investments to be implemented in the second phase of the project are expected to be implemented by the Inter-American Development Bank (in Ecuador and Haiti) and the World Food Program (in the DRC), in collaboration with the relevant National Meteorological Services and with technical advisory from MeteoSwiss.
The purpose of the CLIMANDES project was to develop climate-related services for the Peruvian context (with an emphasis on agriculture) and to improve the education of meteorologists in the Andes region. Customised weather and climate forecasts help to ensure that the farming communities are better equipped to deal with the consequences of climate change. The cooperation between MeteoSwiss and the Peruvian meteorological service was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and coordinated by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
Ten developing countries and emerging economies received help under the CATCOS (Capacity Building and Twinning for Climate Observing Systems) project with setting up a system to collect climate-related data measurements and to continue these data series on a sustainable, long-term basis. Funding: Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
