WWCS Tajikistan
Project

MeteoSwiss co-developed Weather, Water, and Climate Services (WWCS) in Tajikistan with the national governmental actors by deploying a large number of low-cost weather stations and data-driven forecasting services. The data and services are owned by national stakeholders, and a peer-to-peer partnership between the hydrometeorological services of Tajikistan and Switzerland gives the initiative a long-term perspective in delivering demanded public goods.

About the project

The project, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Caritas Switzerland, aimed at securing livelihoods in a changing climate by enabling climate- and weather-informed decision making. For the development of the necessary Weather, Water, and Climate Services (WWCS), MeteoSwiss was involved from 2022 until 2025, alongside multiple other national and international partners.

Low cost, high value

For the development of accessible WWCS, an innovative approach was developed: The combination of low-cost weather stations and Swiss know-how allows for reliable advice on early warnings, e.g., of frost and heat waves, or irrigation advice at minimal costs. This has allowed to set up a national-wide system which has become a primary source of information for the local stakeholders. The approach followed a strict open-source policy, enabling replicability and scaling of the service (currently conducted in Uzbekistan and Cambodia).
