About ALBAdapt

Albania is one of Europe's most vulnerable countries to climate change. It struggles to prepare for extreme weather events because it lacks the necessary weather and climate services to issue effective early warnings. To tackle this, the German Agency for International Cooperation GIZ in collaboration with the Albanian government is implementing the ALBAdapt program from 2025-2030. The program, funded by the Green Climate Fund with a contribution from Switzerland, aims to improve these services and early warning systems in order to help Albania better withstand the impacts of extreme weather and climate change. MeteoSwiss is sharing its expertise and directly collaborating in a peer-to-peer setup with Albanian institutions to help modernize their weather and water infrastructure to improve weather and climate services.

Building a robust foundation

The initiative prioritizes strengthening Albania's institutional framework for its national meteorological and hydrological service. With MeteoSwiss sharing its experience, it will clarify the roles of various institutions, define necessary staffing, and establish robust financial and legal structures. This comprehensive approach aims to create a stable, long-term system that can consistently meet international standards for weather, climate, and hydrological services.
