National Activities

The work of GAW Switzerland includes research and monitoring activities at the four major national GAW stations. In addition, MeteoSwiss works together with research and management partners on the GAW-CH Programme.

GAW-CH promotes long-term observations of the atmosphere and research projects in selected partner institutions focussing on the areas of ozone, atmospheric radiation and aerosols. Especially important activities at the Swiss GAW stations are the long series of ozone measurements at Arosa, the continual radiation monitoring at the Davos, Locarno-Monti, Jungfraujoch and Payerne stations, and the aerosol research carried out at the high-altitude Alpine research station of Jungfraujoch.

Swiss stations in the global GAW network

The Jungfraujoch high-altitude Alpine research station (3,580 m above sea level) is one of 31 global GAW stations around the world established for monitoring the atmosphere. Thanks to its location above the polluted atmospheric boundary layer, this station makes a particularly important contribution to research into the composition of the atmosphere. Four representative stations in the Swiss monitoring network (Arosa, Payerne, Rigi and Thalwil) also contribute their valuable data series as part of the global GAW network. A further seven stations (Bern, Chaumont, Davos, Locarno Monti, Sion, Tänikon and Zimmerwald), known as contributing stations, are connected to the GAW network via associated networks.

National cooperation

In the context of the GAW-CH programme, MeteoSwiss works closely with a diverse range of partners from research and administration at a variety of levels.

In order to maintain the monitoring of the atmosphere in Switzerland of the highest quality as well as the necessary associated research and development, several GAW-CH projects are coordinated since many years by MeteoSwiss.
