COSMO-7 – the model for western and central Europe

MeteoSwiss uses COSMO-7 to generate forecasts for precipitation, temperature, wind and numerous other parameters.

With a grid box size of 6.6 km, COSMO-7 is a weather forecasting model for central and western Europe. Calculations are performed four times a day, and forecasts are generated for three days ahead. COSMO-7 stretches horizontally over 393 x 338 grid points with a grid box size of 6.6 kilometres (0.06°) and covers all of western and central Europe (from Ireland, Denmark and Poland in the north to Portugal and southern Italy in the south). The corner coordinates of the model are: NW corner 54.47 N, 18.40 W; NE corner 56.84 N, 23.02 E; SW corner 35.16 N, 9.80 W; SE corner 36.81 N, 18.87 E. The model has 60 vertical layers. The model topography reaches 3,122 metres at its highest point.
